This is an interview with Sydney Wilton, the owner of My Event Buddee, an exceptional wedding planning and coordination services business. She is a wedding planner who strives to create a wedding that fits your taste and that will be timeless, unforgettable, and fun. Ready to learn more?

I love that I can create a package that fits each and every couples specific needs. Being a designer, my absolute favorite part of my job is designing my couples wedding and overall experience for their wedding day!

What is the biggest misconception people have when hiring a wedding planner?

“I think the biggest misconception when people think about hiring a wedding planner is that ‘we are so expensive’ and ‘its not worth the money’. What most couples don’t realize is that we actually end up saving them money. I have deals with certain vendors to enable them to get the best price. A wedding planner also has experience with a lot of different wedding budgets. We know what’s worth splurging on and what’s not. One example is menu cards. It is common to think you need one on every single place setting. However, if you are having a buffet or a plated meal, most people won’t even look at them. Having this inside information helps us to prioritize what is a necessity verses just a desire, which can be a very overwhelming thing to figure out on your own.”

“One of the biggest benefits of hiring a wedding planner or coordinator is to help with the stress of wedding planning. There are a lot of components in planning a wedding that people either don’t think of or they remember too late. Hiring someone to take care of everything for you enables you to actually enjoy your engagement.”

The take away from the first part of this interview is that hiring a wedding planner can actually save you from spending your budget on things that may not really matter in the long run.

What do you wish clients would ask you more often?

“My recommendations. You are paying me to help make sure things go smoothly throughout the entire process. If you have an idea of the look or feel that you want, let me know! I also have a network of trusted vendors that I can recommend for you and your specific vision. This is to ensure that you have the best experience and that your event is a success. One of my requirements is that I have to approve the DJ. DJ’s are basically running the show, so if a client comes to me and has already hired a DJ that I know isn’t reliable, I unfortunately won’t be able to work with them. This is because I won’t be able to effectively do my job if other vendors aren’t dependable.”

” A lot of clients will come to me after they have already hired several other vendors. While this is definitely an option, I appreciate when you ask me who I do or don’t recommend. For example, if you have already hired a photographer and then end up having a problem with them or are unable to reach them during the planning process, I won’t be able to help.”

“Trust is extremely important when hiring a wedding planner. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t have control over your dream wedding details. You may feel like ‘this is my day I want it to be perfect’ but it’s important to trust people who work in the industry on a daily basis. I really focus on what my couples need, what their vision is, and I listen to what they are wanting.”

“Even if you have a lot of thoughts and ideas already, it can never hurt to ask, ‘This is what we are thinking, what are your thoughts?’”

Sydney really provides so much value! I love how she helps couples execute their vision without taking over the design. But, if you are looking for someone to completely design things for you – she is amazing! Check out some of these photos from an event she planned!

Day of Coordinator’s for weddings don’t exist!

“This is a huge misconception. A person can’t come in the day of the wedding with no prior communication and facilitate a flawless event. What you really need, at the minimum, is month-of coordination. In order to work together with all of the other vendors, I need to see all the contracts. This is to ensure nothing needs to be adjusted before the day of the wedding.”

“If you have a contract with the DJ to arrive at 6pm but you are having your ceremony at 4pm, this is a problem. Arriving early on the day of the wedding will not allow your wedding planner or coordinator to fix any problems, which is our job.”

“Month-of coordination gets me in contact with you two months before your event. Partial planning is usually what people are looking for when they think they need a day of coordinator.”

What wedding planning packages do you offer for couples?

“Full Planning: This gives you unlimited access to me. It is a little bit self explanatory, but basically I plan every single detail. This package also includes design services. My background is in graphic design, so I create custom mood board, help choose complimentary colors, flowers and decor. I also disucss with you what entertainment you would like other than a DJ. Two options are a live wedding painter and rental of marque letters. This mood board can then be shared with other vendors for reference.”

“As graphic artist I can also creates save the dates, invites, calligraphy welcome signs, etc.”

“Partial Planning is basically a build your own package. We have a consultation call and discuss all of the things your are imagining for your wedding and what tasks you would like me, as your wedding planner to help you with.”

“Month-of coordination which we already discussed above. A special perk of working with me is that if you hire me for any of the above packages you get access to my rental options!

As a wedding photographer and videographer, I think that seeing the different options and learning which option would fit best will be helpful to a lot of you who have been thinking about a wedding planner, but don’t even know where to start.

Sydney also offers branding services for other wedding vendors and she has over 10 years experience in marketing!

If you are looking to find someone to help you with smaller events, like bridal or baby showers, consider My Event Buddee. She can help with just the party planning, setup, tear down, or assistance with hosting. This is a great option if you are like me and don’t enjoy party planning.

Certified Wedding Planner In Minnesota

Did you know that you can become a certified wedding planner? What is the difference between someone who is certified and a wedding planner who is not certified?

“When you hire a Certified Wedding Planner you are getting someone who has the education about everything regarding weddings. Just a few of the things we learn during this certification process is appropriate tipping, wedding etiquette, how to juggle a lot of things quickly, handling difficult personalities of guests, parents, or even vendors.

The way I like to think about it is similar to choosing a doctor. You wouldn’t go to a Dr. who doesn’t have a degree because even though it would likely be a lot cheaper, it is a huge risk. I have the experience and education to offer a high quality experience. You are also getting more piece of mind in knowing that you are hiring a professional. The knowledge I have gained from those programs makes a huge difference and has changed how I run my business. I want to provide my couples with the absolute best. I’m still pushing my education even further. In the end, if you decide to hire a certified wedding planner, you are getting someone who knows what they are doing and who is a professional at handling situation under pressure.”

At the end of the interview I asked Sydney what is something she wants people to know about My Event Buddee.

Fun fact: I am color blind – so I have memorized hex codes to identify colors and have pushed myself to grow as a designer because of it!
